Graphic Novel Haul and Marvel Rising Announcement!
Hey guys! So last week Marvel released a sneak peek of their new series Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors. It's a 2 and a half minute video showing some of the cast as preliminary art and sketches for the show. I am obsessed! I can't wait for the show to air in 2018. From what some of the producers were saying in the video and some other articles I read, it sounds like there will be a series of 6 4-minute shorts followed by a feature length movie later in the year. Marvel hasn't announced distribution partners yet but since the Netflix and Disney partnership won't be ending until 2019, it's possible we might see the shorts on Netflix! Fingers crossed... It does seem like the timing is pretty ideal for the release of their own streaming service coming in 2019, but we will see. I am so excited for this new series because it willfeature a few of my favorite Marvel heroes: Spider-Gwen (Ghost Spider in the series), Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel. They are joined by Squirrel Girl, Quake, Patriot, America Chavez and Inferno.
I am so excited for this little series of shorts because I really feel like Marvel is trying to reach a more diverse group of young people than a lot of other super hero series and movies running currently and that we've seen in the past, particularly young girls and children of minorities. It really gives young people today some great role models and heroes to look up to that they can feel more connected to. Marvel has been really great about this in the past with their comic series, especially with the introduction of a ton of new heroes and character during New 52. I am just really excited to see the diersity spread to the TV screen. I'm also really excited about the casting for the voice actors! Dove Cameron, Chloe Bennet, and Tyler Posey are just a few of the excellent voices for Marvel's new teen crew. Also I freaking love the little theme song snippet!
After seeing the announcement of Marvel Rising I wanted to go back and reread some Ms. Marvel graphic novels, which led to borrowing a couple other graphic novels from a friend and buying a new one, so I thought I would do a haul for you guys! I haven't done a haul in a while and honestly I don't plan on doing them often as I typically don't buy a bunch of books or grapic novels at once and often I will go months between purchases. But since I have this nice little stack I plan on reading in the next couple weeks that I haven't talked about with you guys, here ya go!
So first I'll talk about Ms. Marvel by G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona. Volume one, No Normal, will be a re-read for me. I read this one a few months back for my comic book group and loved it! I think I gave this one 4 out of 5 stars on my first read through. This time I plan on reading volumes 1-3 so I may feel differently once I'm done. Like I've said before, I don't believe in judging a comic series too harshly upon just reading the first volume. The artists and writers really have to put a lot of charcter and world-building in to the first volume of a series and often don't have a ton of room for plot development. So I tend to go easier on first volumes than I do after getting in to a series. The first volumes of Ms. Marvel are about a Muslim teenager named Kamala who lives in Jersey City. One day she comes in to her powers by way of a strange mist. The story is basically her figuring out her powers and also just being a normal teenager with a religious family of immigrants. Shenanigans insue and butts are kicked. I plan on writing a review for the first 3 volumes when I finish them.
Next up is The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Vol. 1: The Crucible by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Robert Hack. This is a retelling of the Sabrina you may know from the Archie comics. And it is daaaark! It's rated teen+ and not anywhere close to the fun cheerful Sabrina the Teenage Witch tv series we have seen in the past. It's about Sabrina Spellman who is a witch who comes from a dark past involving her mortal, human mother and her coven-member father who tricks his wife in to having a baby and surrendering her to the coven before locking her up in a mental hospital under a pretty powerful spell. Sabrina goes to live with her father's sisters, also members of the witch coven. Turns out, daddy Spellman has manipulated women even before Sabrina's mother, creating a pretty powerful enemy who has it out for Sabrina. I'm pretty stoked for this one. Witches, magic and graphic blood and gore? sign me up!
Giant Days vol. 1 by John Allison, Lisa Treiman and Whitney Cogar is a story about 3 girls just heading off to university. Susan, Esther and Daisy all meet in their first days on campus and quickly become friends. The series follows them as they tackle the hurdles of being college freshmen. This book has come highly recommended by so many people, I had to pick it up. One of my favorite booktubers Harriet Rosie raves about it as well as a few of my friends. I'm ready for something that is a little light as well, since I have been reading some very heavy books and graphic novels lately and this one is supposed to have really great humorous moments and lovable and relatable characters.
Lastly, Rose vol 1 by Meredith Finch and Ig Guara is everything I want in a fantasy graphic novel series. Badass magical warrior woman with a giant black panther sidekick fighting to restore balance to a world ravaged by war and an evil demonic sorceress? Hell yeah! The art in this looks fantastic and after reading only the first 10 pages or so, I'm totally hooked.
